Teaching Is Indeed A Noble Profession

In these days of high paying jobs of software professionals and fund managers, the profession of teaching is being slowly pushed into the background. Teaching as a profession, especially in schools no longer attracts the attention of the best talent because there are better paying jobs available out there. So what is the future of teaching as a profession? Will it slip further into oblivion or will people still consider it as a good alternative profession, given the fact that there is a big demand for quality teacher?

Teaching continues to be a noble profession as it was from the days of early civilization. A teacher has a special place in society and he or she plays an invaluable part in shaping the character and destiny of a child. So, the importance of teaching as a profession cannot be understated. About Importance of Education

Education is knowledge and there cannot be anything further to this for people who want to achieve success in life. Education builds character and sets apart a person from the crowd. So, getting educated is extremely important and education does not just mean getting a degree and coming out with high grades. Education is a process of gathering knowledge and not about just by hearting some subjects and vomiting in the examination hall. Subject should be learnt in such a way that the student is able to take back something each day when he or she goes home.

The main people who can make the process of education interesting and more relevant to modern day situation is without doubt the class teacher or the subject teachers. Teachers have a big role to play in shaping the character and destiny and knowledge of a student and they should get into the habit of teaching from the student’s point of view. A typical class room where there is some knowledge being gathered would be one where the teacher is only a facilitator and students do most of the talking. We should try and replace the “chalk and talk” concept with more participation amongst student by which education becomes more meaningful and relevant.

Using modern teaching methods is also very useful in making education interesting and informative for the student. Here, teachers have a big role to play and they should adopt teaching methodologies which is away from the text book and they should try and innovate to the extent possible. The problem with the old method of teaching is that more often than not the whole class room is hijacked by the teachers and the whole exercise becomes a monologue where there is no participation from the student’s side. This is not education all about. Educating a young mind involves a lot of hard work and at times the class could be noisy to a certain degree which should be encouraged. However, a clear line should be drawn between participation and indiscipline.

Importance of Adult Education

The concept of adult education may look very out of place in developed countries where the rate of literacy could have already touched 100%. But even today there are vast islands of ignorance and illiteracy throughout the world especially in developing and third world countries in Asia, Africa and South America. The level of ignorance and total darkness as far as education is concerned is something which has to be seen to be believed. The world has a big role to play in removing the darkness of ignorance to these adults and show them some light at the end of the tunnel.

Serious efforts are underway in many such countries of Asia, Africa and other places and a lot of progress is being made. But the sheer scale of the job is daunting and some times it may look almost impossible to achieve. There has to be active participation of both the public and private enterprises in this noble mission and a lot of money should be spent on this especially the rich business and corporate houses. If these people are really keen on doing some acts of philanthropy they should adopt some villages and far flung areas and try and educate these elderly people or even not-so-old adults. Unless this happens, society which is marginalized will not understand the importance and significance of education and will continue to pass on their ignorance to their children and other following generations.

The use of technology as an enabler for removing illiteracy amongst adults should be explored and implemented with a sense of urgency.
